Landscape & Weather
Temperature:
There is a saying “Morocco is a cold land with a hot sun.” This is true. The weather is often quite pleasant during the day, but as soon as the sun goes down the temperature drops quickly. Therefore bring warm clothing and a warm sleeping bag.
Landscape:
Morocco has several different mountain ranges and 12 peaks higher than 13,000 feet (4.000 mtr). The mountain ranges run east-west. The most important ones are (from north to south) the Rif Mountains, the Middle Atlas, the High Atlas and the Anti Atlas. South of the High Atlas are the Sarhgo Mountains. Our mountain bike trips are chiefly in the Middle and High Atlas, and for a short distance in the Sargho Mountains.
Middle Atlas: this area is still full of nomads. Their goat hair tents (khaimas) are a familiar sight in the pastures of the Middle Atlas, especially in the late spring through the early autumn. The Middle Atlas was originally volcanic ranges and is known for its many mountain lakes. A large part is covered with splendid cedar forests and live oaks. The Middle Atlas is a thinly populated area.
High Atlas: a rugged mountain world with isolated valleys and villages. The north slope is covered with live oaks and pine trees, the south slope is eroded. These mountains are especially known for their impressive cliffs, the splendid oases and the beautiful color contrasts from the jagged walls.
Saghro Mountains: a volcanic range with impressive rock formations.
